I have a 34yr old Heil furnace and a 32yr old A/C in the 1000sq ft 10 house I bought last year. The furnace was inspected right away, clean as a whistle! I then had a vent cleaning company come in and whoa! the guy found an obstruction in his camera. He cut a hole in the duct work and pulled out a square couch pillow that was placed in the duct in a perfect upright fit. ?? Anyway, worked great all winter. Hoping for another few more years!! A/C sprung a leak...going mini-split though, muuuuuch cheaper, and hardly use the big box anyway. Last year's full system replacement was ove $10,000, and all prices on HVAC is up by nearly $1000. I'll be lucky if I can afford the furnace. But I'll go with Heil again for sure.

I discovered that the number 1 reason why this happens is because (hard to believe that almost everyone underlooks) the furnace is sloping the wrong direction. In other words its draining the wrong direction causing condensate to accumulate and overwhelms the gasket. Its much easier for a installation tech to level it and let it burn or leak and burn the inlet motor. But check the direction of flow of drain. It should be going away from not into furnace Furnace owners check level of furnace check what direction slope!

I'm going to replace my Lennox furnace of 22 years and have looked at dozens of rating sites. Carrier and Trane are listed consistently in the top five ranks. You never mentioned them. Sounds like you're recommending furnaces where you get the best deals on price. I dealt with the same mentality years ago. I hired a contractor to install a Heil furnace. He gave me the same line. What a piece of crap that was.

Never buy a high-efficiency gas furnace they don't even last a couple years before problems occur I have had four new ones in a row and every one of them broke down. Low efficiency 80% gas furnaces is the way to go !

All you need is a generator capable of delivering 120v and 8 amps or 1500watts of electricity. Remove incoming power to furnace and run a modified extension cord to the generator. Now you have a furnace when the power goes out. At least through most of the night.

I went from 1250 gallons of fuel oil per season to 350 gallons of fuel oil per season just north of Palmer Alaska. I couldn't keep the building warm before anyway, not my huge Log Cabin. I suggest once you've selected the correct furnace for your home, you have a secondary heater for your primary room, similar to the smallest toyostove which is what I am using. At $5 a gallon I have secondary concerns to having a huge building warm I'm happy not to use during the winter. Circulating water from the water room to the heat exchanger I put in front of the toyostove I eliminate electric heating in the water room which usually maintains a temperature above freezing, the tap open slightly, warm well water periodically enters the tank. 4500 watts of flash Heating in the bathroom with a remote switch in my room to turn it on before I enter. And when the water room gets to 28 degrees and the water comes out like a Slurpee, I drain the 300 gallon tank of ice water and refill it with warm well water and the temperature in the room returns to 40° even as its -20 outside. An automotive Square wave power inverter keeps the toyostove running when the power is out with a couple of spare batteries. And electric blankets help a lot, they will not run on a square wave, you can turn the thermostat down at night time or wrap them around you when you're cold. It's not like it's a climate crisis and there's two and a half times more people now then when I was a kid when it was a crisis, also a portable heat pump and which uses 1000 Watts and some solar panels I bought with cash and just plug in the wall, with a double electric meter, Alaska state-regulated it acts like a battery, what I put in I get back without a difference and any excess gets rolled over into the next month at $0.08 wholesale, credits are 8 year old are turned into checks, I don't make that much kind of power, but when it's 50° outside it replaces fuel oil as the sun shines. My toyostove uses only 20 watts of power and so it's easy to keep the heat on when the power goes out for 10 hours with a battery backup compared to a large furnace. With the price of fuel exploding, my bills have gone down paying my investment back instantly.

Unless you live in an area which goes below -10° F, you need a heat pump not a furnace! The heat pump needs to be sized to the heat load, not the cooling load.
